Friendship is power. Friendship is power of authority and control, but not that type of friendship that you know from family and school. I want to share some knowledge about military grade friendship, which can be useful, if you want to create your own organization of militants, religious sect, or elite group.
There is 2 kinds of friendship:
1. Equal. Common ground, mutual respect, help to each other. Friendship of commoners.
2. Hierarchical. Common goal, confidence, vassal's dependence. Friendship of aristocracy.
First type of friendship pleasant thing, but actually not very useful. There is 2 major problems:
- Communications. If you can't control contacts between your friends, they can betray and replace you.
- Time expenditure. You can't use your time effective with this type of group. Your goal is orders, not meetings.
First type of friendship looks like graph, where each friend communicates with others. If your trusted group have 6 members this means up to 36 connections every single day. Horizontal connections useful for work duties, but to shape group in effective form you must annihilate any connections, except 6 last bridges under your direct control. Any co-operation between vassals must be limited. In most effective groups vassals don't know each other at all, because of safety reasons. The group in power must be invisible.
To make your group effective your goal is to make friendship with one level lower caste (vassals) and one level higher (suzerain) but ignore your own class (knights). Every single elite group developed through parasitic control over some organization. If any external force can communicate with your group only through your personal control, this is the first level of authority. If each member of your group creates own group with 6 members, there is second level. If you help them to occupy key positions in organization, there is third level. If you achieved the power to destroy your organization, you have the first title. Ronin. Friendship with your group is beneficial, and your extermination may be too expensive. The real power of elite group is power of destruction.
Any security mechanisms useless against newborn groups of insiders. They are just too unnoticeable, too harmless. Any high rank manager can make this kind of group in less than few years, since he already know weak spots of organization perfectly. I think, every one meet this kind of groups sometimes, who helps each other. Our theory of elites call them shards or embryos. But usually humans are stupid and leaders exploit this groups just to make money without any promotions to vassals. There is no friendship, just exploitation. So, shards are degrade and someone just betray leader after some time. But you are different, right? Different enough to make just one step further?
