I just got done watching a political livestream so I am in that mode.
I think the reason is just the sheep mentality or wanting to appease a boss for either career reasons (setting themselves up for promotion, raise, or to be the office favorite) or for interpersonal reasons. People in toxic environments like the american workplace tend to coalesce around charismatic or powerful people and impose competition on others for their attention or a position in the hierarchy. It's also worth noting that primal human instinct tends towards authoritarianism; while most people will tell you they support liberal democracy and associated values if you were to stop them on the street and ask them, the truth is the vast majority of people never internalize the values of the aforementioned, and when they're put in a situation where they can benefit socially, emotionally, or materially from deference to authority, they will do so. This is the sheep mindset.
