I remember reading over Crime and Punishment at school
the hero killed the old woman with an axe
he saw a cheering crowd and a dead horse
he frequently washed his old clothes
and he said something like "am I a trembling animal or am I worthy…" or something and I thought how cool he was not to tolerate any bullshit doe

The whole point of that book is the protagonist's philosophy as explained by the interrogator where "if a man is destined to become a great man like Napoleon, once murder in his path to greatness is a justified necessary evil"
I don't really have much to say about the philosophy other than that it serves its narrative purpose of informing us indirectly of why the protagonist acts in such a way as he does, even in his actions other than the murder itself
My friend who let me read his copy of the book said he agreed with the protagonist's philosophy lol

also in War and Peace there was this part where the young man character (I think it's the one who does a brief stint as a Freemason) goes to war and the King of Russia trots on his horse amongst the infantrymen, and that was probably the most evocative passage I've ever read in a book
I could literally feel the beatific reverence for the King, it was like a revelation from God but before I knew to phrase it like that

but in the end I always come back to English literature and my favourite lately has been the novels of Henry James which I really like for reasons I will not get into in this thread

Im convinced that Henry James is the ultimate ESL filter, i cannot recall how many times i have tried to get through the turn of the screw but im physically incapable of getting past 2 or 3 chapters at most without having an aneurysm

It's hard for Englishmen as well
Henry James' books are a great teacher because they make it impossible to read word by word, and therefore force you to consider the entire sentence at once and tease out its meaning
