Men and women of the 18th century rarely said "God" without qualifying Him as "Almighty God", and they strongly believed in the concept of Divine Providence
One particularly interesting letter talked about the early settlers' efforts to ascertain the Aborigines' understanding of the Deity, where they learned that the Aborigines had super primitive religions that were basically shamanism and animism, but the Aborigines did believe that people go up into the sky after dying.
This meant that there was hope that even the uncivilised savages could be made to comprehend the reality of God's existence, since they clearly understood that Heaven exists
Unfortunately the settlers' hopes were to be dashed, since nowadays Aborigines have very little subscription to any religion, unlike the African niggers who were successfully made to understand God and are now Christian in great numbers
