When I was reading through the esoteric, one Chinese legend say that a man called Xu Fu who was an alchemist sent by the first emperor searching for the elixir of immortality. Xu Fu took a fleet of ships swimming through the sea reaching old Japan. On his arrival he introduced medicine and culture understanding to ancient Japan. Feeling desperate to fail his quest, he went after one last legend on the top of mountain Fuji, where it was said that he met the long-lived hermit arriving at destiny.

Wow I wrote a whole thing and then I tabbed out and it got deleted

The tldr is I think Japan is really cool, I'm not super into anime or that side of the culture but I think Japan has a lot of very interesting history, architecture, and especially natural beauty. I'd love to spend a week in Japan, a few days in Sapporo and then maybe do some camping or something out in the more rural areas. Hokkaido specifically bc I love the snow. Politically I think Japan is super interesting because they definitely have a tendency towards conservatism but are also very progressive by a lot of Western standards so it's just kinda like eh. Japanese politics from what I understand aren't super important because most people don't really participate and the CDP and LDP are for the most part the same party and it's just "do you want the liberal or conservative reskin" so it doesn't really matter

I never really got into the mythology because it's kind of difficult to know where to start, I know about like Izanami and Izanagi but that's about it.

I also went on a tangent about how my favorite foreign country is still probably Russia rather than Japan because of their rich history and I think Russia has some of the world's most beautiful nature, up there with the Scandinavian countries, but how it's a shame that their government basically left 90% of the country to rot and end up looking like the otherworld.

There was a legend once of a very powerful oni king called Shuten Doji, the evil Yokai ruled over a mountain and made terrorism his rule over the poor villagers. Heros went to stop him but knew they couldn't defeat him in normal combat so they poisoned his drink. Thus they gained the upper hand and killed the evil Oni who was said to be one of Japan's strongest creatures.

You don’t have to read myths or legends, but just understand their behaviour culture and be not alone.

One of Japan's dark historical moments was the betrayal of Akechi Mitsuhide who went to betray his higher master lord Nobunaga Oda. The legend of the "Demon King" of Japan made Oda famous and he was also hated by many, he was both a samrt military leader and a very weird individual. He was unorthodox in his culture and social life. It is said that if Akechi didn't betray Oda, the Japan we know would be very different not fallen under house Tokugawa.
