running debian with minimalistic window manager. bloatware=history. L=G
I just miss visual studio… not because environment, but cmake wants me to learn a whole ass new thing. im too old for this… L!=G… about to relapse to win11.

Out of the three main OSes, Linux is probably the worst in terms of forced change, and lacks backwards and forwards compatibility of software. Packages from Debian 11 won't work on Debian 12 won't work on Debian 13 etc. The OS where you can run software from 2000 on an OS from 2025 is Windows. MacOS is not bad too, but worse. Somewhere in the middle because things do change eventually.

Linux AppImages exist but they're finnicky, unless you're packaging the entire OS into an AppImage, you can't be 100% sure if your AppImage will work on a particular Linux setup you're trying to run your app on. At which point it's just docker with extra (less?) steps. Which is ridiculous and not how things should be done. The way things should be done is having a stable, unchanging base of libraries and apis, the rest is bundled by apps, statically linked.
