This post also caused my third eye to open and I now have a hunch that the spike in transgenderism is partially a result in increased political tensions over the idea of gender roles and the conflict between trad gender norms and the opposite reaction which is what you described (if you like having long hair, being shy, etc you must be a girl), so in this sense the left are being reactionary in response to right wing reactionism and it's causing people in the middle to transition instead of simply embracing themselves as individuals because relatively basic behaviors are being gendered these days. The conclusion I draw from this is that everyone needs to, like, chill the fuck out, but God knows that ain't gonna happen anytime soon lol.
That's just a game theory though because this idea literally just came to me so lmk ur thoughts
