>>82010>>82022Never shot a WASR specifically before but one of my friends has a little Draco he jokingly calls his semi auto flash bang and that's made or imported or whatever by Century, it's a fun little pistol in 7.62×39 but god help you if you actually have to use that indoors for self defense, good news is you and your attacker will be blind and deaf though till the polce show up.
That said I've never heard of anyone complain much about modern WASR's HOWEVER you should be careful to not buy the older line up of WASR's because Century Arms used to have a lot of quality control issues with those like poorly riveting their receivers together as well as trying to save a buck by slapping in cheap cast trunnions which your kinda not supposed to do since that's what prevents your gun from becoming a pipe bomb.
Modern WASR's are good entry level AK's and a far better investment than anything from PSA or Pioneer Arms.
>but if anyone knows any better models, definitely drop them in this thread. Arsenal .inc makes some of the best stamped receiver AK's out of surplus Bulgarian parts and also makes a few milled receiver AK's here in America too but those are gonna be more heavy, Arsenal is also nice because they have a huge line up of rifles chambered in both 7.62×39 and 5.56. Kalashnikov USA is good too as well as TheAkGuy AK's made in Texas from surplus Polish parts BUT those are never in stock online and won't be for a while. Zastava is also great if you want a Yugo style AK that's even more tanky and is built to fire rifle grenades out of the box (good luck finding rifle grenades and legally aquring them though, LMAO).

>>82010>>82022>Are palm magazines (like the ones shown in the WASR-10 promo pics) good, or should I go for steel combloc mags? They're fine usually but if you get a lemon I'm sure they'll replace it if you call them or just change out the spring in the magazine. Steel mags look more kino though if you care.
Me personally I think the old bakelite magazines are the coolest looking but they're not as durable hence why they're so rare.
>What tools should I get? Are there dedicated AK cleaning kits out there?Dunno, I just use basic bitch Hop9 stuff.
>Does wooden furniture have any problems unique to itWood warps over time from getting hot and cold and drying up an sucking up moister from the atmosphere but quality wood furniture will last you decades just fine.
>and are they significant enough to be worth springing for polymer instead?Nah but if you want a more tacticool polymer AK regardless then go for it. Most Canadians are still rocking their old Norinco SKS's and fake AK's with autism (Vz. 58's) just fine and to this very day many standing armies in Africa and LatinX Americana's are still issuing the FN FAL with wood furniture and it's usually the receiver finish that show's wear and tear rather than the wood.
Vid related is a helpful buyers guide too.

>>82041I find that actually quite believable every since president Zellig and president Poutine started arguing over who gets to rule over some peninsula in the Black'd sea and whether or not the Azov Battalion are literally NatSoc's or not since they're fond of double lighting bolt patches and like doing Boy Scout solutes an have a tendency of being homophobic and beating up gay people or whatever but they also have a few token Jews in their units or whatever so it's fine…? I dunno.
But yeah since all that started happening Russian schools have been teaching kids how to safely throw grenades and field strip rifles or whatever as well as do nuclear survival drills with actually NBC hazmat gear from what I understand (honestly sounds kinda fun, my school was fucking lame by comparison).
Frankly I think both the Ukrainians and Russians got trolled hard by some Georgian dude named Joe Stalingrad or something which is both funny and tragic at the same time.

>>82748I finally figured you out. You just hate anybody above 75 IQ.
>>82725I'll make sure to get a newer one. I hear some of the older ones are also really badly warped which can throw off the sighting and such. You mentioned 7.62 and 5.56 but do you know if there are any good 5.45 AKs available for the civilian market? I hear 7.62 has a weird arc past a certain range and 5.56 is western ammo which defeats the point of getting an ak imo. If I get a russian gun, i want to use russian ammo.
>>82730I'll probs go for steel mags just because they're the coolest looking. I wonder why palm mags come with only 10 rounds. Is that due to regulations relating to the seller (ie, is it illegal to sell a rifle WITH a 30 round mag) or is it that some regions only allow 10rd mags?
As for tacticool, I'm a little torn. I feel like the wood furniture is more respectful to the AK's legacy and I feel like a wooden stock would be more comfortable than a polymer one considering you're supposed to get your face very low compared to how you aim an AR.
Then again, I wonder if I'll get bored with a stock AK so I might go for a polymer one with a rail system since rails on wood are fugly. Also soviet optics and such might be very expensive.

Thank goodness they're a serious company now and have a minimal amount of actual QC'ing rather than slapping together parts that some grunts likely beating the hell out of prior.
>You mentioned 7.62 and 5.56 but do you know if there are any good 5.45 AKs available for the civilian market? There are some from Arsenal models like the SLR-104 SERIES and the AIMS-74 Elite Rifle from Atlantic Firearms. Can't speak much for the quality of that latter half though so you should do your research on it.

That said 5.45 is close to unobtainium in North America since the war so your wallet will suffer if you choose to get an AK chambered in that. 5.45 is only something I'd recommend to someone living in Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus (Maybe India too?) where it would actually be a common thing to see on sporting goods shelves and thus not something you'd have to pay a premium for online.
5.45 is just the Russian answer to 5.56 anyway, it's probably on par with or maybe even better than the N.A.T.O. standard but better enough to shell out more money for? probably not. I dunno if you like hording and reloading brass then sure otherwise just get an 7.62 or 5.56 AK.

>Also soviet optics and such might be very expensive.Probably also unobtainium unless you wanna over pay for one on Gunbroker off some Boomer who probably originally got it for about tree fiddy back when there weren't sanctions, I'd imagine the elite soldiers like the Spetsnaz and Chechen warlords are hoarding them for their Gucci rifles.
Any reason you haven't considered just slapping on a Aimpoint or Trijicon SRO with a rail adapter instead? Is it just a desire for clone correct autism?
>I wonder if I'll get bored with a stock AK so I might go for a polymer one with a rail system since rails on wood are fugly.Anyway speaking of mounting optics to AK's I'm quite fond of Midwest industries ak gas tube rail myself because it allows you to have a red dot mounted further away on your AK but still allows you to keep the bottom half of the wood hand guard, fugly perhaps? But I like the way it looks but I guess we have different taste. Of course you probably wouldn't want to do that with a rifle scope and would be better off using the what is at this point standardized left side receiver rails that everyone's using these days.
But yeah sounds like you should start with a plastic furniture AK first.

i used to take the long AK (type 81 rifle, 4 moa, 7.62x39, short stroke gas piston (a fake AK)) for hunting too but it is too heavy at like 13 lbs vs 6 lbs for the sg542
the type 81 shoots a 123 gr 7.62x39 bullet at ~2500 fps for 1600ft lbs of energy which is good for hunting deers or marginal for meese
the sg542 shoots a 147 grain 308/7.62x51 bullet bullet at ~2800 fps for 2500 ft lbs of energy which is good for hunting WHALE or grizzly or rhinocerus or elephants[note 1]
for reference, a non-hunting rifle like a 14.5" barrel ar15 will shoot a 55 grain 223/5.56 bullet at 2800 fps for 950 ft lbs of energy which is marginal for deer and might not be legal depending on your local hunting laws (it will still get the job done, but you should probably get a more powerful rifle).
note 1: the british used 303 british to hunt rhinos, and 303 made ~2500 ft lbs of muzzle energy in 24" which is less than my 19" barrel 308 sg542 with milsurp bullets.
learn it well.

likewise for many 223 and 308 autoloaders, but the sg540 platform was not in scope of the turdo order in council. its expensive but the burgers can't have them and they are really good.
theres no equivalent for us in how burgers can buy 300 dollar poverty ar15s thoughbeit, we have no low end budget guns really, just complete garbage rods

(micro) red dot sights are worthless on pistols. when it comes to drawing a pistol fast, what matters is that you know exactly how it feels in your hand, after one million draws, so that you dont even see the sights but you know its in your hand correctly and you know your finger is pointed at what you wnat to not exist
