ive recently visted my aunt again and been enlightened to the difference between home-grown and store-bought produce - specifically tomatoes. I was thinking about starting my own tomato plant(s) but idk the first thing about taking care of plants in general. What equipment should I have? How long is it from seed to plate for tomato, cucumber, etc.? How do I make sure my dogs don't eat the plants? An old man at work once told me that coffee grounds and eggshells are baller fertilizer but idk if thats necessarily true - is it?

Sorry buddy but you'll have to wait until next year to grow tomatoes, they take around 3 months to bear fruit so you should look up your growing season.
You should tell what your land situation is, I have little planter boxes and I have a bin that I throw coffee grounds and eggshells in which breeds a lot of worms and ants, it's very good soil to grow in. Here in Virginia I have never failed growing tomatoes, squash, or beans, but there are things like broccoli and watermelon that I've never been successful in growing

at the risk of making this bread too much about me,
>land situation
basically my plan is to live on one of these. i dont think it'd be a bad idea to put planter boxes on the top deck so they get lots of sunlight and rain, and i dont think bugs will be much of an issue at all given there will obviously be no direct contact between the planter boxes and the larger land, so i suppose the most pertinent questions here would be "what is the ideal planter box soil composition?" and "will being in proximity to salt water affect the soil at all?" - ofc i wont water the plants with salt water but i wonder if being near to it will impact them at all.

I think that if you're gonna live on a boat then keep in mind that it might present a challenge in that it will sway which can stress the plants. You'll definitely want to keep worms in this case because they're good to compost and I imagine good bait, since you're not connected to the land it will be much harder to maintain good soil composition so stuff like that will be important. Bugs and critters are good
