One issue with mahjong could be that despite it being a trutaku game with meaningful choice and slightly less meaningful gambling, it may be too complex for the common normie to learn. So they go to either playing poker or slots, because they're inherently easier than mahjong, play quicker and have a lower entry barrier.

Just remember suji isn't 100% safe. 1 - 4 - 7 2 - 5 - 8 3 - 6 - 9 Nakesuji is middle suji 456. Same concept as suji but not so safe than suji. Of course it depends on their kawa. The 5 block theory is good to start off as an adept. It's really useful. It's also good to read your logs and understanding what you did wrong. Another thing is watching videos and streams from experts. Betaori (fold) if you're hand is shit and isn't worth fighting for. Genbutsu is 100% safe when discarding the same tile from your previous opponent (kamicha) due to the furiten rule. And you should give Yostar at least $50 in order to get the flow going.

Ackshully, i think rushing tanyao/yakuhai nomi every round could be a valid strategy as long as you stay in dealer seat, cuz every round repeat (honba) you get +300 extra points for winning if you rack up the rounds high enough you can easily get an extra 1000/1500 points making it 2500-3000 total or something Probably not very practical though
