I have some strong feelings about this

Part of (actually, a lot of) the blame lies with VVP. I'm sure back in the 2000s he was a promising and inspiring leader especially coming off of Y*ltsin but it's clear now he's an old egotistical faggot. Granted, it could be worse, Russia could be in the hands of niggers like Zhirinovsky for example, and I think overall Yavlinsky would have been the best possibly outcome because of the 500 day plan as opposed to the retardation of shock therapy but that's beside the point. Putin in the long run has done more harm than good I think. I don't exactly see him as everything wrong with Russia though because a large part of the issues Russia faces are imposed by the west.

I heard this theory that NATO is essentially a big scheme to make western (mainly American) defense contractors endless money through standardization schemes but it relies on a boogeyman so that it can justify raising defense costs year over year, and that boogeyman can't be China because ruining relations with China would cost the West a lot of money, which is how the Russian military is simultaneously a paper tiger laughingstock and supposedly the biggest threat Europe faces at any given moment. There are certain countries where this is true I suppose, namely the Caucasus nations and Estonia, but if Ukraine, where corruption flows like water, can btfo Russoids regularly, the rest of Europe certainly can lole. I don't know if I necessarily believe that narrative about NATO since it seems kinda steeped in this Russian victimization narrative but it's undeniable NATO makes Lockheed-Martin a lot of money and that Russia being the go-to bad guy for the West doesn't make much sense, even if Putin is a retard and made it worse for himself.
If everything were right in the world, Putin would be dead/in prison/retired, new leader would come to power and the west and Russia would normalize relations. New Russian leader would place anti-corruption measures against the siloviki and oligarchs, focus on infrastructure and manufacturing, and the world would begin to address Chinese militarism, genocide, human rights violations, etc. I'm not holding my breath or anything though because even if Putin dies tomorrow I think the majority of Russian normies are brainwashed by Z propaganda or simply don't have an appetite for political change, and those in power are so entrenched in Russia that the next guy would either be Putin 2.0 or some soulless nigger rubberstamping corporate and oligarchic interests, further devolving Russia into China's oilfield. If things keep on in this trajectory Russia will become fully subordinated as China's bitch and the death spiral of the RF will become unavoidable. Sadly.
