pure science like that is one of the last things that would ever get any funding because it doesnt provide any immediate direct benefit though ill admit nothing useful tangibly useful has come out of it but i could say that about alot of things in recent memory, its more about the by product tech if anything. nothing about my life would or wouldnt be improved if they built a bigger HLC, outside listening to more background noise youtube videos about it. I feel like its one of those things that would only see any real benefits after multiple generations of people.

While that may be true, 0.3% still represents billions of dollars that could be redirected towards, for example, social services. Science is very important, yes, but with the socioeconomic conditions on the ground, I'd argue astronomy shouldn't necessarily be at the top of America's priority list.
