Companies now pitch as selling points that they have no stores and no employees you need to speak with, as if human interaction were a bug to be optimized out. They manufacture political outrage, directing those smart enough to open one eye towards demographics: race, religion, sexuality. They ask you to internalize this, to see it as existential struggle, rather than the churning of a forever changing world, all the while, they billow smoke into the air and destroy nature to build data centers for an already waning technology. Only those with both eyes open can see it for what it is, and like the good dogs they are, the masses have already accepted their conditioning; that long, nuanced explanations are uncool, as if "coolness" is the metric by which the truth should be measured. When news becomes entertainment, what can you expect of people but to want it to be entertaining? This, OP, is how you get the situation you refer to. We have become passive and complacent, as a people, as a society, as a class. We have become whipped dogs, sat in the freezing rain, obediently succumbing to hypothermia, knowing the consequences for breaking into the house, or more simply, because it's what the dogs next door do, so it must be right. Anybody with the clairvoyance, or perhaps just the instinct, to resist this sluggish death is handled by being directed towards false enemies; this manifests as right-wing populism, a confused ideology that is simultaneously for the people and despises any change that would allow the people to gain leverage or power over their leash holders.
